August 2004 Newsletter No. 33

August 1st, 2004

In This Issue:

We are playing a bit of catch-up ball with this issue. Normally there would have been an issue of AWOnews in early May, but unfortunately your editor contracted a rather nasty bug shortly after the last issue went out, and recovery was rather slow. Consequently the Spring issue fell by the wayside. Our apologies for this, and we hope that this issue makes up for that, at least in part.

As you know, since last November AWOnews has been produced in electronic form only due to the cost of distributing a paper version, and this policy was confirmed at the meeting of club reps in peterborough in June. If there is a member of AWO who you know does not have access to the Internet, it would be helpful if club Reps or their designate could ensure that someone prints off a copy for them so that they are also “in the loop” on upcoming and past events.

Peterborough was another terrific weekend, from all accounts, even if the turn-out was disappointing low; and there were a number of relatively new faces taking medals for their excellent wines. This was followed, of course, by the Canadian finals, and we include herein a summary of those awards which went to Ontario entries.

Further information also on Festival 2005, coming next June to London, as well as the wise words of our President, and information on a new vineyard in the Peterborough area.

Congratulations to the Organizers of Festival 2004, and to all winners in both the AWO Competition and the Canadian finals!

February 2004 Newsletter No. 32

February 1st, 2004

In This Issue:

Lots of information on the upcoming AWO Festival 2004 in Peterborough, “Bacchus to the Kawarthas”.(I would have to admit that “Bacchus” in the logo looks a lot like someone I know!). Peterborough always puts on a good show, and this should be no exception, judging from the amount of thought and planning that has gone into it. Below, on the final pages of this issue, you will find a list of seminars and a registration form, on which you can also register for accommodation while space remains available; so don’t delay, and take advantage of the discounted “early bird” prices.

We also extend our congratulations to the Ontario-based medal winners in the 2003 WineMaker magazine international amateur wine competition. This competition attracted 1499 entries from 4 countries. People in 8 Canadian provinces entered, and garnered about 10% of the prizes, with Tim Vandergrift of Port Coquitlam, BC, being named “Winemaker of the Year”. Congratulations to all winners. A list of Ontario medal winners appears below; many thanks to WineMaker magazine for permission to reprint this information.

Larry Paterson also contributes an interesting article on the flavour variances in Canadian versus American oak barrels, which makes for very interesting reading. Our President, Glenn Keown, provides his usual useful insights into what is going on, so relax, pour a glass, and read on!

November 2003 Newsletter No. 31

November 1st, 2003

In This Issue:

While we do not like to say it, this could be the last issue of AWOnews. In any event, it is the first one which is NOT being produced in paper format. The reason is that AWO finances are in such dire shape that there isn’t any money to pay for a printed copy. The problem with an e-mail only copy, of course, is that not everyone has access to the Internet. To give this the widest possible circulation to members we are posting it to Winetalk (this also avoids the very laborious and error-prone alternative of typing all known e-mail addresses into the file, and then trying to clean up the ones that bounce. Those already on e-mail may therefore receive it twice as they will receive one through that route to ensure they are not overlooked, and will may also receive it via Winetalk if they are also a subscriber to it.

If you know of anyone who should receive it and hasn’t done so due to lack of Internet access, please pass a copy on to them.

We regret having to take this step; however each issue of AWOnews costs approximately $500, more or less, to print and mail, and the bank account is virtually empty.

The Executive is of the opinion that a significant adjustment in fees may be required next year, along with changes in the number of physical medals (as opposed to medal certificates) awarded, if we are to stay financially viable (this was laid out in some detail in our last issue, which we recommend you read again), so it may be possible to return to a print version on a smaller scale in future. Please lend your views to the debate.
